3D CAD and printing

Most of the projects I have worked on required a combination of off-the-shelf parts and custom mechanical components. I usually design the latter in FreeCAD, openSCAD or Blender and create the parts with my 3D printer.

Some of the most interesting and complex examples include the hulls of most of my RC sailboats, which you can check out on my youtube channel, as well as a completely 3D-printed RC car, but also smaller parts for electronics projects.

Small RC car

FreeCAD

This is a small, minimalistic radio-controlled car suitable for speeding on hard floors. It is the second version of a previous, undocumented radio controlled car whose main goal was to serve as an interactive toy for my cat. This newer version fixes many of the problems the old one had, and can in fact be used to play with cats by attaching a string to the back of the car.

A key improvement was the purchase of wheels, as opposed to 3D printing them too. The rubber on the wheels gives much better control. The rest of the car is entirely 3D printed from black/transparent PLA plastic.

In the future I plan to add a sleek looking cover, to keep all the cables tied up and to improve the general appearance. This will be a significant endeavour as I would like to give the outer case an aerodynamic and realistic look.
